Patio Posts Project

I was recently commissioned by my father from Top Gun Builders in Ojai, CA to build eight patio post covers to wrap around existing steel beams. The clients had an existing cover with teak wrapped around the steel support beams. Teak is pretty expensive so the client requested African Mahogany to get close enough to the existing without breaking the bank.

My method was to make a three sided sleeve that would slip over the beams and then attach the last piece to cover it.

Once those were glued up I cut the top trim pieces and profiled them with a Roman Ogee router bit.

We used tung oil cut 50/50 with turpentine for the finish. It really brought out the depth in the grain. Now the sun will do its thing and darken it up over time.
